What are the types of pain?

Pain is broadly grouped into two types, acute and chronic. Acute pain begins when you suffer an injury or illness, then it goes away in a few months or when you heal. Chronic pain lasts at least three months and, in most cases, goes on much longer.

You may also experience different categories of pain, such as:

  • Nerve pain
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Central pain syndrome
  • Myofascial pain
  • Breakthrough pain
  • Headache pain

Another type of pain called referred pain occurs when pain originates in one part of your body but you feel the pain in a different part.

What commonly causes chronic pain?

Chronic pain can begin as acute pain, but it often develops due to health conditions such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Herniated disc
  • Neuropathy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Post-stroke pain
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Pelvic pain conditions: Epididymitis, Cystitis, Endometriosis, Vulvodynia vaginismus, Levator ani syndrome, Coccydynia.

You can find relief from chronic pain with integrative care at Atlantic W.I.S.H. Clinic.

What is integrative pain management?

Atlantic W.I.S.H. Clinic takes a non-narcotic approach to pain through integrative pain management. Instead of addictive medications, we use integrative and rehabilitative interventions.

The following therapies effectively relieve your pain without narcotics. They can also help you lower your dose or recover from a narcotic addiction.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R)

PM&R specializes in using passive and active exercise, stretching, balance training, sports-specific training, and modalities such as taping to promote healing and alleviate your pain.

Injectable therapies

Using ultrasound to guide the injection, our provider at Atlantic W.I.S.H. Clinic can deliver pain-relieving therapeutics such as anesthetics and/or steroids, dextrose (prolotherapy), and hyaluronic acid.

Orthobiologics medicine

This is a type of injection containing platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The platelets trigger healing, regulate inflammation, launch new blood vessel growth, and protein scaffolding.

Balancing Treatment

Atlantic W.I.S.H. Clinic specializes in alternative therapies proven to alleviate pain and promote healing. Our provider may recommend acupuncture, Energy Medicine (microcurrent, FSM, & Alpha-Stim®), electroacupuncture, acupressure, or cupping.

Nutritional therapy

If you have chronic pain, you also have local and/or systemic inflammation. Following an anti-inflammatory diet and supplementing with anti-inflammatory nutrients can go a long way toward alleviating your pain.

Mind-body techniques

Mind-body techniques that relieve pain include mindfulness meditation and therapies that combine mindfulness, breathing, and movement, such as yoga, tai chi, and/or qigong.
